Here, SAAO’s major telescopes operate in some of the world’s best conditions for astronomy, on a hilltop 1 800 metres above sea level, near the small town of Sutherland. The site was chosen for its year-round clear skies, semi-arid setting, and absence of light and other pollution.

Drakenstein Lion Park

Drakenstein Lion Park was established in 1998 to provide lions in distress with sanctuary, where they could live in safety, free from abuse and persecution, and be treated with the compassion and respect they deserved.

The Park is situated in the scenic Cape Winelands and comprises of 50 acres of sprawling lion habitat.

The Park is actively involved in improving the quality of life of lions in captivity, locally as well as internationally, either by offering these animals a lifetime home or working in conjunction with other animal welfare organizations to secure a safe future for individual animals in dire need.

The Park is not involved in commercial breeding or trade and offers lifetime care to all of it’s animals. All the animals brought to the Park are captive bred / hand reared and cannot be rehabilitated to the wild. The animals at the Park are assured a chance of living out their natural lives in an enriched and safe environment.

Lion Feeding Times are on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 16h00.

Eagle Encounters at Spier Wine Farm

As arguably the largest Raptor Rehabilitation and Education Centre in South Africa, Eagle Encounters believes that an awareness and appreciation for the environment should be nurtured from youth. The casual and personal manner in which we approach our education programme encourages children to ask questions about and interact directly with a variety of raptors.

During the course of our hands-on demonstration, the following topics will be briefly discussed:

  • Species identification

  • Comparison between appearance adaptations and natural habitat

  • Breeding habits

  • Rehabilitation & release

  • Falconry, falconry techniques and their benefits in rehabilitation

  • What to do with an injured or abandoned raptor

  • Design for function

  • Food preference and hunting techniques

  • Behavioural patterns

  • Habitat destruction, poisons and persecution vs organic farming methods & co-existence

  • Basic conservation regulations regarding raptors

We have discovered that children retain considerably more information from a learning experience when it  involves all of their senses.  To facilitate this learning and cater to your specific requirements, we have two interactive and exciting package options.

Western Cape Educational Excursions
Exotic Animal World

Over 700 small animals, from fish to amphibians, from reptiles to birds, from mammals to invertebrates.

Walk Amongst the Animals. A large section of this unique sanctuary is a specially designed enclosed tropical garden.

Here you can walk freely amongst tropical birds and ring-tailed lemurs, which not only gives the animals far more space to roam.

It also means you can visit on a rainy day, without getting wet!

Memorable Encounters

On top of the tropical gardens they also have a walk in aviary, complete with birds above and guinea pigs below! You’ll also pass the reptile bay, home to baby tortoises and beautiful snakes (safely behind glass!).

The fresh-water aquarium doesn’t just hold fish, but other exotic creatures that many will have never seen before.

From there you can move on to the creepy crawly house, as long as you don’t mind big spiders, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and spiny Australian Stick Insects!

For those more fond of the cute and cuddly, just cross the river to say hello to the meerkats and our Spotted Eagle Owl’s, not to mention a whole crowd of other residents just waiting for a visit.

Live Animal Demonstrations

Trained and knowledgeable keepers hold demonstrations of some of the animals on weekends, school and public holidays.

These sessions are held at 11 am and 2 pm, and give you an even closer look at some of our residents, and the chance to learn a little more about them.
